This month we talk to Operations Manager, Frederik Wils, about his role and the facilities at Mtec Belgium in order to gain further insight into our latest outpost in Europe and the unique advantages open to our clients, colleagues and partners as a consequence.
Frederik, can you tell us more about your background and current role at Mtec Belgium?
‘I started working in air freight from a young age, firstly for the family business and subsequently at Brussels Airport as a freight forwarder. There I gained extensive experience with customs and freight forwarding, not just by air, but also sea and road transport too. By the time I moved on from Brussels Airport, and began working for a specialist art handling and transportation company, I was responsible for all air exports. Working more specifically with fine art ignited my passion for art handling and shipping, and I continued to work with the company until my appointment with Mtec in February 2017. Working in Europe for a British company makes for a diverse and highly interesting role where my knowledge of and fluency in a number of languages certainly helps makes things run much more smoothly.’
Tell us more about Mtec Belgium: the services offered to clients and the facilities…
‘For me, as Operations Manager, what I want for Mtec Belgium is for every installation, transport or supervision, to be a complete success and contribute to the increasing European presence of the company.
The location of our warehouse provides our customers, especially in the UK following Brexit, with a viable opportunity to reduce customs related costs by transporting works directly from and within Europe. Geographically we sit in the perfect location to provide direct links to most major cities and art-related destinations. This is demonstrated by our regular weekly shuttles, including those to London, Paris, Brussels and Antwerp.
So far we have executed shipments to Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA with a number including installation at final destination. We have also recently carried out our first dedicated, nail-to-nail artfair sea shipment from Mtec Belgium to New York and used the facility to manage direct client shipments following FIAC. As well as these dedicated jobs, we are also managing a number of private client shipments and installations using our fine-art vehicles, including smaller air-ride vans, perfect for accessing city-centre jobs.
At the warehouse we have full packing facilities as in the UK, where we manufacture our own transport and museum-quality cases for worldwide transport. The facility is fully alarmed, climate-controlled and of course, is equipped with a range of fine-art handling tools and equipment.
In the future, we hope to be able to expand both our personnel and vehicle inventory in order to build upon the services and facilities we can offer to our clients.’
