Planning Public Art projects- Things to consider

Mtec’s Project Manager, Paul Embleton, shares his top considerations to make when planning a Public Art project:

  • Location suitability –  Is the proposed site conducive to the installation of the artwork: is there adequate access to get the artwork to the desired location? Is the material robust/durable enough to withstand conditions at the proposed site?
  • Planning Permission – in the Greater London area this can take from 8 to 16 weeks depending on the council. The best thing to do is to start a dialogue with them at the planning stage and ensure good communication. Building a good relationship with the planning department is imperative and we have been dealing with the majority of the planning departments in central London for the last 20 years.
  • Security – Will the work need to have security monitoring for the safety of the work or as part of work’s insurance protocol? It may be that, due to location, a security guard or 24 hr cctv monitoring is required.
  • Floor loading/positioning – This is something that is often overlooked, yet it can be the sticking point in the smallest of projects causing delays in installation. It is important not only to assess where the site can take the weight and size of the work but also to consider fixing points: will the existing paving need to be disturbed or drilled into?
  • Foundation – Will the work require foundations or a base? This may require detailed planning to conceal any structural foundations or the fabrication of site-specific base or platform.
  • Events – If the artwork is located in a busy or prominent location it may be that temporary removal or additional security is required, which can have a major effect on the budget for the project, for example: London Marathon, Royal Events etc.
