Mtec Artfair | Frieze and FIAC

This year Mtec had its largest presence ever at Frieze Masters and Frieze London. In terms of number of vehicles going to and from the site, picture hangers and sculpture technicians on booths and the number of clients appointing Mtec to represent them, it was our busiest fair yet! We were also busy working on other projects around the South-East to coincide with the fair as well as working on client installations at our state-of-the-art viewing facilities close to London.

Our technical team were on hand to take on any last-minute jobs associated with the fair and our dedicated Artfair shipping team were ready to turn around estimate requests, making us a one-stop logistics solution for our colleagues, partners and clients. Our specialist vehicles were at LHR most mornings of the week of the fair for expedite deliveries into and out of town. In terms of consolidated transport, within the week following the fair, Mtec had two large art trucks leaving London for Europe; one serving Paris and Italy, and the other Liege and LUX airports and onto Switzerland.

This year also saw the introduction of our very own client wheels! Galleries and clients were able to borrow our MTEC bicycles to travel both onsite and between the fairsContinue Reading…

Ai Weiwei @ Museum of Baalbek

Earlier in September some of our Project Managers travelled to Lebanon to install Ai Weiwei’s ‘Foundation’ at the Museum of Baalbek. The new installation is part of a group show at the prestigious archaeological site called ‘The Silent Echo’, and features Susan Hiller, Theo Mercier, Marwan Rechmaoui, Paola Yacoub, Cynthia Zaven among others. Curated by Karina El Helou and organised in conjunction with Studio Cur/art, the show looks at the importance of on-site Museums and explores in the context of Baalbek, how monuments and artifacts become symbols of an obsolete past, subject to destruction during war and victims of iconoclasm.Continue Reading…

Ai Weiwei’s ‘S.A.C.R.E.D’

After the success of the recent project at Downing College, Cambridge, it was a pleasure to work with Ai Weiwei again, this time in Cuenca, Spain. As part of a series of events taking place across Spain to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes, Weiwei’s iconic work ‘S.A.C.R.E.D’ is currently being exhibited in the 12th century cathedral of the Spanish city. The work, which is comprised of 6 cells detailing the Artist’s famous incarceration, presented a complex set of logistical challenges as did the unique exhibition space.Continue Reading…

Expansion of our Packing Department

Over the forthcoming months Mtec will be introducing a number of exciting developments within our Packing Department. We are embarking on a research program into the use of new materials and processes for Fine Art packing and crating. We are keen to explore and utilize methods and materials from many different industries, which we feel could be beneficial for our clients, their artworks and the processes involved with transportation, storage and installation. Research will be focused on longevity of packing and casing and,  as with all of our ongoing developments, will have the key company directive of ecology and sustainability of products and services at its heart.

Heading up the research will be our newly appointed Head of Packing, Ross Dixon.Continue Reading…

Support #teammtec at the Art Techlympics!

On Saturday 13th August, Mtec will be taking part in the first Art Tech Space ‘Art Techlympics’ at Bow Arts Trust. Teams will be competing across a series of 5 events in a point based competition modelled on the Art Handler Olympics that held every 4 years in New York (http://www.ahonyc.com/), and, of course, #teammtec are going for Gold! Events include ‘The Hand of God’ – a timed, one-handed removal of the Art Handler’s best friend: the rubber glove, and we’ve been hard at work training for the day.

With music, food (supplied by Bexley Brewery Ltd, Steve’s Kitchen BBQ and more) and a chance to catch up with our colleagues and friends it promises to be a great day all round, and there are only a handful of spectator tickets left, so head to www.arttechlympics.uk to buy yours!

Conrad Shawcross’ – ‘Paradigm’

Earlier on in the year we had the honour of installing Conrad Shawcross’ ‘Paradigm’ at the Francis Crick Institute in London. Commissioned by both the Institute and the Wellcome Trust ‘Paradigm’ was selected as part of a collaboration between the Crick and Artwise Curators and is inspired by Thomas Kuhn’s theory that scientific discovery is not a linear process but the result of several shifts in thinking which lead to series of breakthroughs.Continue Reading…
