‘The Catch’ – A sculpture for Rugby World Cup 2015

‘The Catch’ is the latest in an ongoing series of collaborative projects between Land Rover’s Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern, and the acclaimed Italian artist, Nino Mustica. Working with Gaucho Productions, two identical sculptures have been installed by Mtec in two of the UK’s most iconic rugby venues (Twickenham and the Millennium Stadium) and will remain for the duration of the Rugby World Cup 2015. . Inspired by the sports’ line-out, the sculpture measures over 8 metres tall and is the second piece to be made by the unique partnership to explore the relationship between abstract art and automotive design.

We initially worked with Land Rover, Nino Mustica and Gaucho Productions on installing the first sculpture in the series, ‘Unstoppable Spirit’, on London’s South Bank for Frieze 2014. The installation of the two 7m high sculptures in such a prominent and public space created its own unique obstacles and the week-long project took meticulous planning. Lifting equipment had strict parameters due to the public nature of the thoroughfare and transport had timed windows in which to arrive and leave around commuter traffic in the area; both issues Mtec have experience in dealing with and working around on major inner-city installations.

MA-CO was founded in 2013 as a direct result of demand for Mtec’s services within Venice. We have always had a strong reputation in the city as an art handler due to our extensive knowledge when it comes to art installation and logistics within Venice generally. Following the closure of our suppliers, there became a real need for our company to have a base in Italy to negotiate the very unique transport issues faced when moving and installing art into Venice; thus MA-CO Italia was founded.

Sculpture in the City 2015

After working with MTEC for over five years now one thing is for certain: everything will be fine when it comes to installing the sculptures. The team’s level of experience and ability is second to none and I feel confident speaking on behalf of myself and the Sculpture in the City project team when I say that we have never worked with a team with such extraordinary level of diligence and care. Put simply MTEC make the most extraordinary tasks appear easy.’

Stella Ioannou – Co-director, Sculpture in the City

The Square Mile contains some of London’s most iconic landmarks and thanks to a unique collaboration between the City of London, local businesses and the art world, each year it becomes enhanced with internationally renowned works of sculpture which serve to form an exhibition within the urban environment.

Mtec have had the honour of being involved in Sculpture in the City over the last five years, not only as art installers and transporters, but also as patrons of the project.

This year we have enjoyed making the most of our new social media platforms to converse with our partners on the project, and share media, not only during the install and but also of the finished project.

We’d love to see your images of the works you may come across, on your way to work or out and about, just be sure to tag us (@mtec0 and @sculpturecity ) or use the hashtag #sculptureinthecity

Sculpture in the City runs from Jun 30, 2015 – Jun 30, 2016. You can download a map of artworks here.
